The inmate's full legal name (spelled correctly). Nicknames won't work. Their date of birth, if you have it — this speeds up matches when several people share a name. A booking number, if you already have one. That's it. The search is free and public.

Step 1 — Open the official roster

Step 1 — Open the official roster

A balance scale inside a courtroom.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office runs the only official inmate search, called the "Who's In Custody" / In-Custody Report. Start at the Sheriff's Corrections page and follow the link to the public custody search. This roster covers everyone currently held in the county system — both the South Placer Jail in Roseville and the Auburn Main Jail.

Step 2 — Enter the name

Step 4 — Confirm the bail amount

Step 1 — Open the official roster

Stack of multiple file folders or documents.

Type the last name and first name exactly as they appear on a government ID. If you're not getting results, try the last name alone to widen the search, then match by date of birth or booking date. Recent bookings sometimes appear under a slightly different spelling.

Step 3 — Read the record

Step 4 — Confirm the bail amount

Step 4 — Confirm the bail amount

Group of people joining hands in unity.

A custody record typically shows: full name, booking number, booking date, housing location (South Placer or Auburn), the charges, and the bail amount. Some records also list a scheduled court date or release status. Write down the booking number and bail amount — you'll need both for the next step.

The bail amount on the roster is what it costs to release the person. You have two choices: pay the full amount in cash to the court (refundable, minus fees, when the case ends — but it ties up your money for months), or post a bail bond through a licensed agent for a fraction of that amount, usually 10%. Most families choose the bond.

New arrests can take a few hours to post to the roster. If the person was just taken into custody, they may still be in booking. Check the county's 10-Day Arrest Log, wait about an hour, and search again. Still nothing? Call us — we'll help you confirm whether and where they're in custody.

Many third-party websites scrape jail data and charge fees or run ads. The Placer County Sheriff's official roster is free and the most accurate source. Always confirm custody status and bail with the Sheriff's Office or a licensed bail agent before sending anyone money.
